The NY Daily News: Gritty, not pretty: The toughest guys on the movie screens this fall are real men of action -- November brings Denzel Washington , 55, on a speeding train (again) in "Unstoppable." There's also prison-break thriller "The Next Three Days" with Liam Neeson, 58, and Russell Crowe, 46. Crowe has proved his mettle from "Gladiator" on, and Neeson kicked and punched his way through the recent thriller "Taken," dispatching armies of European thugs with aplomb. - Thanks, Kris C, Francisca

The Toronto Sun: Summer Movies winners and losers -- That same weekend Robin Hood rode into theatres, with Russell Crowe dispensing with the tights and the traditional dashing demeanour in favour of a darker, tougher rendition. After lacklustre results from State of Play and Body of Lies, Crowe needed a hit, and although the $200-million production only made back about half that amount in North American theatres, it tended to attract larger audiences overseas. - Thanks, Kris C

NY Times Sunday Book Review - Oz Related - Woolgathering -- Do geography and climate influence philosophy? Are cold and dark places more conducive to thinking than hot, barren and bright ones? Is it true, as one character in Murray Bail’s new novel, “The Pages,” puts it, that “too much light is fatal for philosophical thought?” And where does all that leave Australia?

The Atlantic: What Sports Movies Should Do Differently -I was in Alaska last week, and my host happened to have a copy of Mystery, Alaska to hand. We watched it mostly for novelty value, but this 1999 oddity, about a matchup between the New York Rangers and a pond-hockey team from a town in relatively-rural Alaska, is actually a decent template for what sports movies ought to do differently. To put it briefly: the underdog team loses the pivotal game, no romances are consummated, no one is particularly morally redeemed and everything in town stays essentially the same. - Thanks, Allison

Jacksonville.com: The winner advances to the league championship on Aug. 28 in Philadelphia. The Axemen reached the Grand Final last season before falling to the New York Knights. Academy Award-winning actor Russell Crowe, who brought his Rugby League team from Australia to Jacksonville for an exhibition in 2008, is apparently rooting for an Axemen victory Saturday. According to AmericanRugbyNews.com, Crowe was tweeting with AMNRL president David Niu shortly after the semifinals were set, and when Crowe was told the Bulls would be traveling to Jacksonville, he tweeted: “Go the Axemen!!” For fans who want to join Crowe in cheering on the Axemen, gates open at 1:45 p.m. Saturday, and walk-up tickets are $5. From Andy at GQ Magazine UK: Some unpublished quotes from Russell about his new film that I thought you might enjoy -- Russell Crowe in The Next Three Days - "I have seen Pour Elle, but this script is not a copy of that. There is a core narrative that's on the same basis but this is in no way someone's copy. It is such a taut, page-turning script. Bang, bang, bang: great scene after great scene. If we manage to do it right, it's so much about hope. It's so full of life pressing down but is about following your heart and doing the thing you believe in. That core question is fucking outrageous: you love a woman but if you do what is best for her, you become someone she cannot truly love. Bring it on!"

The National: In a review of The Clash of the Titans -- "What is it that elevates the film Gladiator above other sword-and-sandal epics, such as Troy and 300? The answer is simple. Unlike the musclebound warriors Achilles and Leonidas (Brad Pitt and Gerard Butler, respectively), Russell Crowe’s Maximus was a character that lived, breathed and felt pain – he was someone we could believe in." - Thanks, Allison

At the IMDb, first still from TN3D - Thanks, Ismail

USA Today -- Pop Candy: Today's Pop Five: geeksdream's fave celebrity dreams -- 4. Being rescued from a tower by Russell Crowe about to be crushed by a tsunami. (Oops, my inner princess is showing.) - Thanks, Sherezade

The Age au: Passion and paltry pay packets -- THE pursuit of an artistic vision, rather than a bankable salary, characterises the true artist - which is just as well because now more than ever artists can barely make a living out of their chosen art. Cate Blanchett and Russell Crowe - the so-called superstars of the arts world - are among a few who command wages beyond the orbit of a company chief executive or a prime minister. For the rest of the arts community, particularly writers and dancers, paltry incomes have to be supplemented by work beyond the stage, the studio or the garret. - Thanks, Caliope

Encore Magazine au: I was bruised and battered – Phillip Noyce -- He currently has two Australian projects in development. Moviesonline.ca: Emma Thompson Interview, Nanny McPhee Returns - Q: You and Maggie Gyllenhaal are friends. Can you talk about your friendship and what it’s like having the opportunity to work with a good friend who you’re actually close to? -- EMMA: It’s bliss. As you can imagine, it’s much easier than working with someone you’re not trusting and you don’t like (laughs) which can sometimes happen. I think on a film like Nanny McPhee, it’s vital that you cast people you know are -- what we would say in my country are company members, people who play with the team, support the team. I mean, Maggie was so fantastic with the kids. She really did mother them. The girls were in floods of tears when she left on her last day. It was so touching. Look, however much I like his acting, I’m not going to be casting Russell Crowe in a Nanny McPhee movie. Do you know what I mean? I mean, because that would be too difficult. Not that he would do it. Cue the phone calls. (Laughs) “Crowe is McPhee!”

I Watch Stuff: Grown Ups streaming into your computer or video game console before it reaches pay TV? It sounds like a dream, I know, but it's coming true. Netflix and Relativity Media have announced an agreement whereby the studio's releases would stream on the Netflick machines only a matter of months after DVD release--which is the time usually reserved for watching those shitty movies on HBO and Starz. "Relativity has produced and financed some of the biggest and best films released in the last few years," Netflix chief content officer Ted Sarandos said in the statement, failing to mention that Relativity's 2010 releases include The Spy Next Door, Dear John, Bounty Hunter and Robin Hood. Now imagine a montage depicting families switching channels from HBO to their Netflix queues while "The Times They Are a-Changin'" plays. Wasn't that powerful and so true?

Hometownlife.com: Understanding world of schizophrenia -- A portrayal of paranoid schizophrenia was seen in the recent movie release A Beautiful Mind starring Russell Crowe who portrayed the real life of John Nash, a man who is still living and who has suffered from schizophrenia in varying degrees for many years. Mr. Nash is also distinguished by winning the Nobel Prize in economics and is said to have intelligence on par with Albert Einstein. Also interesting to note is that John Nash's now mid 20-year-old son suffers from full-blown a schizophrenic illness. - Thanks, Allison

The SMH Sports - The Last Word: Scroll to "Head of the Class." - YOU'VE got to love the nickname that Russell Crowe has bestowed on Sam Burgess. He refers to him as ''Headley'' - and it works on so many levels. Obviously there is the very English connotation and then there is the fact that his teammates bag him for the size of his head. There is no way that the super talented forward is a big head, but it is a rather large noggin. - Thanks, Steph
