His philanthropic work, beyond being an actor... has a legacy that's gonna live on." -- And Crowe added, "I think there's a period of time where... he did the stuff that was informing the history and the future of cinema." - Thanks, Oz Fan

MTV Movie Blog: BREAKING: Russell Crowe Will Play Robin Hood AND The Sheriff In Ridley Scott’s ‘Nottingham’ - "How do you find an actor of Russell Crowe’s caliber to play against him? Well, Ridley Scott seems to have found the answer: let the Oscar winner play both roles! That’s right, in one of the odder casting ideas in at least a few days (it just so happens this news comes in the same week Johnny Depp signed on to play Tonto), Crowe is going to play both the sheriff of Nottingham and Robin Hood himself in Ridley Scott’s upcoming flick, “Nottingham.” - Thanks, Marilyn K

Also at Coming Soon: There have been some interesting developments on Ridley Scott's proposed Robin Hood project Nottingham out of the L.A. junket for his upcoming political thriller Body of Lies. The most interesting one being the claim that Russell Crowe will not only be playing the Sheriff of Nottingham as reported earlier, but he'll ALSO play the part of Robin Hood. During a press conference, Crowe was asked about the project and its progress since back in July, it was reported (right here) that the project had been delayed despite Universal having already claimed November 9, 2009 as its release date. "No, we haven't done that yet," Crowe responded to the reporter's query. "It's one of those things where we're taking our time with. You don't want to be doing Robin Hood unless you're going to be doing it really f*cking well. It's got to be the best one ever done otherwise you should do something else." - Thanks, Allison

Russell and Leonardo remember Paul Newman (CBS2 Video) - Thanks, Allison

NZ Herald: Russell Crowe pays tribute to Paul Newman - "Earlier, I read a quote from him which I find to be really amusing," Crowe told ABC Radio today. "It speaks so much to who he is. "He said that regardless of his status, he was always a character actor - he just looked like Little Red Riding Hood." - Thanks, Layne, Allison, Mary Ann

Can Magazine: On the BOL posters - "It looks like Warner Bros. is continuing to test out some poster ideas for Body of Lies. I don't know if it's just me, but doesn't it look as if the studio is throwing in too much concept and not enough content? While the part-plain part-spy motif works, there is something lacking with these."

The LA Times: Leonardo DiCaprio battles the odds in 'Body of Lies' - Thanks, Cindy - They have updated the official site - somewhat

Cinematical: Cops & Killers: 'Lethal Weapon 5: New Recruits' and Lee Child's 'One Shot -- "First comes a story from The Hollywood Reporter that Paramount has hired Josh Olson to adapt Lee Child's novel One Shot. It's the ninth in Child's Jack Reacher series -- why they aren't adapting the first, I have no idea. Now, I haven't read the series, but from all accounts Reacher is the kind of man we haven't seen onscreen since Harry Callahan or Wendell "Bud" White."

Film Threat's review of LAC, the new 2 disc DVD edition - Thanks, Allison

The Newark Examiner: Sooner or later parents, as your son or daughter ages, they're going to ask that one inevitable question "Momma, where do Russell Crowes come from?" Now you could be a total cinemaphile and say Romper Stomper when Crowe first caught the world's eye playing an Australian skinhead. But he caught American attention in L.A. Confidential. If you haven't seen L.A. Confidential, it's not really your fault, it was released the same year as Titanic was. So when we were all seeing Titanic for the ninth or tenth time, who had any money left over to see a movie about corrupt cops in 1950's Los Angeles? It's too bad because L.A. Confidential was, and still very much is, an amazingly tight movie. It's every bit as mean and sharp as James Ellroy's prose. And unlike the dreadful mess that Brian De Palma made out of Ellroy's Black Dahlia, Curtis Hanson actually keeps everything running along silky smooth in a story with alot of threads and turns and triple-double-crosses... Plus Basinger won Best Actress in this flick. L.A. Confidential finally get's the disc release it so deserves... - Thanks, Allison

According to the IMDb - Nottingham -- Pre-production -- Scheduled to begin shooting March next year. Status updated: 16 September 2008 - Thanks, Allison

Fantasy Moguls: BARD'S EYE VIEW: 'Express' Won't Zip to Victory but 'Body' is Built for Box Office -- "...Fantasy Moguls thinks it will only pull in $70 million, along with five PTA, seven Top 5 and a rating of 7.1. I believe it has the potential, barring a rash of scathing reviews, to do better even than that, but $100 million is a stretch. I will say that for $16 in Ultimate Movie Moguls leagues, you'd be a fool to pass this one up. This isn't Righteous Kill we're talking about here. (At least, it better not be.) $25 in Box Office Moguls is a tough sell ... pay close attention to the theater counts and early reviews to make sure you're getting the most for your money." - Thanks, Layne

The West au: Don Spencer to be recognised for services to kids' music... Now his two grandsons, Charlie and Tennyson, the children of his daughter Danielle Spencer and her actor husband Russell Crowe enjoy the majority of his live performances, and he said he wouldn't be surprised if they were to follow in the family's musical footsteps. "They love music, they dance and jump around," he said. "I'm pretty sure there's every chance they will be involved in music, what with their parents and their grandfather - I think there's a good chance."... Spencer's famous daughter and son-in-law will not be in the crowd to see him receive his award at the Music In The House luncheon at NSW Parliament House tomorrow, as Crowe is in the US and Danielle will be in the studio with a string section recording her next album. He said Danielle played her new songs to him, but he did not get involved in the songwriting process. "She's too good for me," he said. - Thanks, Penny, Anne S

The Tartan (Carnegie Mellon): Related - Anthony Rapp -- The tone of admiration in the questions was clear. One student asked eagerly if Rapp got to “hang out with Russell Crowe” during the filming of A Beautiful Mind. Anthony replied that not only did he hang out with the famous Australian, he got to touch his Oscar, describing it as a “really heavy, really shiny jewel of craziness.” - Thanks, Allison

Off Topic, but dear to me - Today the old Yankee Stadium will close - Here are my memories of the team and the game of baseball.

Transcribed from the Sun Herald -- Crowe blows his CIA cover - Christine Sams -- The Sun-Herald -- September 21, 2008 --- Rusty talks about his latest, controversial thriller.RUSSELL CROWE is about to head overseas to promote his film Body Of Lies with co-star Leonardo DiCaprio. The Oscar winner has confirmed his travel plans with S, sending an email to say he will leaving Sydney by the end of the month. "Soon I think, in a week or two. The premiere is in NYC on October 5," Crowe said. Body Of Lies is an intense CIA-based drama which is creating plenty of early intrigue in Hollywood because of its strong political content. Sir Ridley Scott, who directed the film, says the intensity of the two actors is what makes it special. "What I'd emphasise is the fascinating two characters that are walking through this piece," Scott told Empire magazine. "In a nutshell, it's about trusting no one and believing no one." In the film Crowe plays a CIA veteran named Ed Hoffman. DiCaprio's character, a former journalist turned CIA operative, tries to track down a terrorist leader. While Crowe has said little about the film during his stay in Australia, he told reporters in the US that Scott had explored an intensely political theme without receiving any outside pressure from studio bosses. Crowe did, however, admit the film might not be a huge mainstream hit as a result. "I don't think it will be very popular," Crowe told MTV in the US. "I think the perspective of Body Of Lies is ongoing - its [the] machinations and creations of the American government, in terms of its foreign policy," Crowe said. "I don't think it's so responsive to what's happening now because what's happening now is actually the fruit of seeds planted two or three decades ago, if not more. But I think it's timely to do a movie like that ... it's important. Ridley is up for [portraying] the true negatives of this web of intrigue that's been created." The film is released here on October 9. - Thanks, Oz Fan

From Cindy: Oscar Flashback - The Insider -- From Sasha Stone at Awards Daily, a nice bit about The Insider missing out on the Oscars it should have won.

The Daily Telegraph (Scroll): Mrs. Crowe sings again - INSIDER first wrote about Danielle Spencer's plans to revive her singing career in June. Now, we can reveal, Mrs Russell Crowe has begun recording an album in Sydney. Spencer's rep was reluctant to give any details of her music, although it is understood she has flown in a high-profile British producer to work on it. Spencer, 38, released her debut album - White Monkey - through EMI in 2001 and her style was likened to Kate Bush and Tori Amos. Crowe directed the clip for the single, Tickle Me. - Thanks, Allison

Don't forget AG on HBO TV tonight

The Canberra Times: Peter's backing out of the rabbit hole -- Long article on Peter Holmes a Court and the Rabbitohs and his relationship with Russell - "Peter Holmes a Court's plan for a debt-free Souths leagues club hasn't worked out that way, writes Roy Masters ... Of owning 1500 square metres of premises on the third floor, but now requiring 2500 metres on the first floor, he said: "Again, this was never a promise." Holmes a Court's somewhat silent financial partner, Crowe, is to play the sheriff in Nottingham, his next movie. It's a sympathetic portrayal, while Robin Hood is cast as a less than charitable figure. South Sydney members claim to relate more to the words of the sheriff in the 1991 movie Prince of Thieves, in which he said: "That's it, then. Cancel the kitchen scraps for the lepers and orphans, no more merciful beheadings, and call off Christmas."

Movies ie: Affleck on SOP - "Again, I'm happier in these kind of movies right now," he says. "I'm not the big hero, I'm not the leading man, I'm just part of a team. With State Of Play, I'm in there with Helen Mirren, Robert Wright Penn, Russell Crowe, Rachel McAdams, Jeff Daniels - how can I not sign on for that? And with He's Just Not, there's Ginnifer Goodwin, Scarlett Johansson, Jennifer Connelly, Jennifer Aniston, Kris Krisofferson...You don't think about how well will this movie do, how buffed up do I look, or what sort of pose should I do for the poster? You just think, I'm going head-to-head here with someone that I know I'm going to have fun with, someone I'm going to enjoy doing this scene with. "A big opening weekend just doesn't compare with that. Not anymore..." - Thanks, Allison

The NY Times: A Chance to Win a Seat at the Oscars -- Oscar fans can now win a seat in the red carpet bleachers on Hollywood’s biggest night, The Associated Press reported. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that 300 bleacher seats in front of the Kodak Theater will be made available for next year’s Oscar ceremonies, on Feb. 22, in an online lottery. The lottery, which opens at noon Eastern time on Monday, runs through Sept. 28. Applicants can register for up to four seats at oscars.org/bleachers

The Observer Reporter: GBS -- "One of the songs on the disc, "Company of Fools," was co-written by Doyle and Russell Crowe, the Oscar-winning actor who's dabbled in music on the side. Doyle produced Crowe's album, "My Hand, My Heart" and was a member of Crowe's band, the Ordinary Fear of God, when he toured Australia. The two met "in true Canadian fashion" at the National Hockey League awards ceremony in Toronto. They were both presenters, and Crowe told Doyle that he was a Great Big Sea fan. From there, the two wrote a bunch of songs and it's been "one of the coolest musical experiences I've ever had," Doyle said. "He's a fantastic lyricist.

A heartwarming note ---"Ms. Murph- Sure love your site! Had to check in with your site as soon as my aircard could get satellite internet (Sprint was evidentially commandeered by the military/emergency management people).  Here in Deer Park, TX (between Houston and Galveston), we already have electricity in spots (though I don’t) and generators for the important stuff, like the fridge and my movie projector-so we can have the neighbors over in the evening to watch Gladiator or 310 to Yuma on my giant movie wall. There are some barrier islands of Galveston that are only reachable by airboat and not only people but houses are missing, only the slab is left…(they found one beachfront house 2 miles inland.) But mostly, we are super blessed down here, and tough…lol So, thanks for the site-I just wanted you to know how much the normalcy of checking your sites has been a comfort for me these last few days… Thanks so much! -- Kim in Texas"

Forbes: Forbes Celebrity Valuations - Hollywood's Most Overpaid Movie Star -- Aussie Russell Crowe wins this year's award for most improved. The actor was the most overpaid celebrity last year, earning movies like Cinderella Man $5 for every dollar he was paid. (Kidman came in second.) This year Crowe was the 18th best earner on our list with a return of $6.88 for every dollar he earned. The bump can be attributed to last year's American Gangster, which grossed $265 million in worldwide box office. Crowe returned a healthy $10.80 for every dollar he was paid on the film, bringing his ultimate payback number up to $6.88. Countryman Kidman could use a little of that good mojo this fall. - Thanks, Allison

Time: 47 Things to See, Hear, and Do This Fall - Directed by Ridley Scott, opens Oct. 10 -- After the box-office failures of Rendition, In the Valley of Elah, Lions for Lambs and Redacted, you'd think Hollywood would have given up trying to lure crowds into a movie about the war on terrorism. Well, director Ridley Scott (Black Hawk Down, American Gangster) thinks he knows how to sex up geopolitics: give it the sizzle of a spy thriller and get Leonardo DiCaprio to star in it. In the adaptation by William Monahan (The Departed) of the acclaimed novel by Washington Post columnist David Ignatius, DiCaprio is a smooth spook trying to fool al-Qaeda leaders into believing their top command has been infiltrated by a Westerner. Russell Crowe plays the Leo's devious CIA boss. — Richard Corliss - Thanks, Allison

The UK Telegraph: Dusty Scene in Tomb -- "The Titanic star prepared for the scene in a former Moroccan jail for months, but had no idea the intensity of the shoot would leave him drained and sick. "I got sick for two or three days afterward because of the intense energy it took." - Thanks, Steph

The NY Times: in an article on Hugh Jackson in Australia -- "...Mr. Jackman was not Mr. Luhrmann’s first choice. Mr. Luhrmann intended for Russell Crowe to play the character, a brooding drover with no name who helps Ms. Kidman’s aristocrat drive cattle across a barren homestead during World War II. They have only broadcast one other Souths game at the beginning of the season and that one they only allowed subscribers in England to view it so I don’t know it they are going to pull the same thing with this game. Here’s the link [click on sun 07 sep] to Setanta’s schedules so people can see when it’s on in their time zone.

More on the pride of the league from the Rabbitohs site - ‘Pride of the League’ Honoured by the National Trust -- Thanks, Oz Fan

Will we ever see this again? Thanks to CGee, who took it during a TOFOG tour:

The Australian: South Sydney Rabbitohs a national treasure -- RUSSELL Crowe was named a national living treasure in 2004. Now his beloved South Sydney Rabbitohs are, too. South Sydney was last night named the National Trust's (NSW) inaugural community icon at a gala event commemorating rugby league's centenary season at Sydney's Powerhouse Museum. - Thanks, Steph

EW.com: Pop Watch Blog - This just in: American actors not manly enough -- Variety columnist Anne Thompson has written an interesting piece titled "U.S. short on tough guy actors." "Where have the manly movie stars gone?" she asks. Why do directors, who could once turn to Steve McQueen (left), now need to look outside America for a macho man?  (Hello, Russell Crowe, Jason Statham, and Gerard Butler.)

The Australian: Rabbitohs reject move from spiritual home - Thanks, Allison

Monsters and Critics: Fall looks hot at the big screen (BOL) - Thanks, Allison

Comingsoon.net: The Weekend Warrior -- This weekend last year, Lionsgate had relative success with James (Walk the Line) Mangold's remake of the Western 3:10 to Yuma, starring Christian Bale and Russell Crowe, which opened at #1 with $14 million in 2,652 theaters, beating out New Line's action flick Shoot 'Em Up starring Clive Owen and Paul Giamatti, which tanked with just $5.5 million. - Thanks, Allison

[Not even a gleam in Russell's eye] -- In the News UK: Guy Ritchie denies Russell Crowe to play Dr W - I don't have a Watson," he told Empire at the premiere of his new film RocknRolla. "Somebody just told me that I have Russell Crowe lined up but that's news to me. I suspect that hasn't happened and I'm still looking for my Watson." - Also at Empire on line: Exclusive: Ritchie Talks Sherlock Holmes - And Russell Crowe is NOT Dr. Watson - Thanks to all

September 1 - Labor Day USA

I have opened a chat room at the Yuku Crowe Forum, for those who like to talk in real time with one another.

Hollywood Elsewhere: Sherlock Homie -- There's a story up today about Russell Crowe, 44, thinking about accepting a second-banana role as Dr. Watson in Guy Ritchie's Sherlock Holmes, subordinate to star Robert Downey, Jr. If true, it simply means that Crowe has moved into that 40-plus phase in which a top-dog actor figures (a) "if I like the part, I like the part" and (b) "I don't have to be the big star every time out." - Thanks, Maria

Jack Nicholson went through the same thing in the early '80s (when he was also in his mid 40s) when he took supporting roles in Reds and Terms of Endearment

The Guardian: Chick-flicks aren't just about love and shopping -- "I'm tempted to claim for my alternative chick-flick canon the oeuvre of Hayao Miyazaki, whose animated films, unlike their Hollywood counterparts, invariably have strong heroines. But chick-flicks don't necessarily have female protagonists. What was Gladiator if not a chick-friendly epic? All my male chums kept muttering about it not being as good as The Fall of the Roman Empire, but women didn't care; they adored the way Maximus stayed faithful to his dead wife, lusted after Russell Crowe or Joaquin Phoenix, and formed queues around the block." - Thanks, Allison

The UK Sun: Elementary, My Dear Russell -- RUSSELL Crowe is set to star alongside Robert Downey Jr in a new, "bad ass" take on Sherlock Holmes, according to a report. The Sun said that our Rusty is on the verge of signing to play Dr Watson, sidekick to Downey's Holmes in a film to be directed by Mr Madonna, Guy Ritchie.... A movie insider told me: “Russell wants the part, Guy wants Russell. All they’ve got left to do is dot the i’s and cross the t’s.” -

Also a mention at Movie Hole: "In a separate interview today, Ritchie reportedly even mentioned his interest in having Russell Crowe play Dr. Watson in his upcoming "Sherlock Holmes" flick (which apparently hasn't even got a script yet, so could be a ways off)." -- Thanks, Steph

New York Magazine Fall Preview: The Male Duo -- Leonardo DiCaprio and Russell Crowe: The Film - Ridley Scott’s Body of Lies (October 10) is based on Washington Post reporter David Ignatius’s well-reviewed wish-fulfillment thriller about a secretive hunt for an Al Qaeda leader. - The Relationship - Crowe is an anti terrorism mastermind who conjures up a convoluted plan and persuades an injured, idealistic soldier (DiCaprio) to execute it. Tension ensues. Why We’re Excited - We’re excited to see DiCaprio play tough again after great work in Blood Diamond and Departed—and even more excited that Scott and Crowe are back to tough dramas after the loathsome A Good Year. Why We’re Worried - Someday, Hollywood is going to make a great war-on-terror thriller. So far only United 93 has clicked.

IndieLondon: Film Review - Body of Lies -- Ridley on working with Russell and Leo - "...Commenting on the pleasure of working with both, he added: “The more I do it, the more I find these guys’ intelligence, their sensitivty, everything… it’s no accident that they are where they are.” - Thanks, Cindy
