Thanks to Christine ("There are so many misunderstandings about the legend- most people incorrectly connect Robin Hood with Nottinghamshire rather than Yorkshire and Derbyshire to the north; they think that a medieval forest had far more trees than was the case (much of a 'forest' was more like scrubland, with smaller areas of dense woodland); they think that Sherwood Forest in its present shrunken state was RH's main haunt whereas the earliest stories place him in Barnsdale Forest and the Forest of the Peak to the north etc etc!"): A web site with complete information on Robert Of Loxley

Empireonline: Exclusive: Russell Crowe On Robin Hood And Bill Hicks, and more - In the latest issue of Empire, now on shelves, our Big Interview is with Russell Crowe, star of the (really rather good) film version of State of Play and all-round acting titan. While we had him, though, we decided to ask a bit about upcoming projects, and here's a little of what he had to say. First up, the formerly Nottingham and probably currently titled Robin Hood -Thanks, Steph

From Pat: Found this blog detailing Russell's business success with Souths as an illustration for a point on knowing your customer.

Wikipedia: Robin Hood Ballades and Tales: The earliest surviving text of Robin and Marion is a musical play entitled "Le jeu de Robin et de Marion" (ca.1284) written by Adam de la Halle (ca1240–?1288) and found in the book Norton Anthology of Western Music Volume:1 (pages 46–47). In this song the sung text is:

"Robins m'aime.
Robins m'a.
Robins m'a demandée.
Si m'ara.
Robins m'acata cotele.
D'escarlate bonne et belle.
Souskanie et chainturele.
Aleuriva!
Robins m'aime.
Robins m'a.
Robins m'a demandée.
Si m'ara."

It translates to:

"Robin Loves me
Robin has me
Robin asked me
if he can have me
Robin bought me a skirt
of scarlet, good and pretty
a bodice and a belt
Hurray!
Robin Loves me
Robin has me
Robin asked me

Thanks, Allison, Cindy

Variety on Robin Hood: "Crowe plays Robin of Loxley in an original story that hews close to historical facts of the period. Abandoned as a child, he finds community with the common people of Nottingham. Robin's abandonment and trust issues hamper his ability to fall in love. He meets his match in Marian, a strong, independent woman."

The Herald Sun: Russell Crowe turns farm home into Robin Hood bootcamp - Thanks, Steph, Cathif

Capital News 9 (NY): The men behind "American Gangster" visit Union -- The movie "American Gangster" was a Hollywood hit, making more than $200 million worldwide. It's the story of the Frank Lucas' heroin empire and Richie Roberts, the man who brought it down. Tuesday, for the first time, the two men told their story together to a packed house at the Nott Memorial at Union College. Roberts hopes their message of staying away drugs stays with people as much as the movie. - Thanks, Allison

From Meli: Thought you might like to see the scans of an interview in the current Empire magazine that I got today in the UK. Wonderful interview with Russell and Empire writer Martyn Palmer. I believe it is an original interview as I don't remember seeing it anywhere else. It covers 6 pages in the magazine, I hope I have labelled the attachments correctly. For anyone wishing to buy a copy, it is the issue dated April 2009 and has Christian Bale in the new Terminator movie on the cover.

The Australian: Bruce Beresford takes a screen break for theatre -- "There are certain plays I'd adore to do. Julius Caesar, almost any of the history plays, Richard III." If he had the world to choose from who would he like to do Richard III with? "That's an interesting question isn't it?" He thinks for a minute, so concentrated he might be on a quiz show. Then the key turns in the lock. He beams. "Russell Crowe. He'd be great. He's a great actor. He'd be so good." - Thanks, Steph

The SOHood: Halle Berry, Oscars and More -- Russell Crowe, Do demonstrate—or simulate—humility. “You want to project the best parts of your true self,” says Jason DeSanto, a senior lecturer at Northwestern University who’s written speeches for members of Congress. “It’s important to be both gracious and humble. And if that’s not who you are, be fake.” Russell Crowe (Best Actor, Gladiator) overcame both an embarrassingly wispy tie and a reputation for being a jerk with this eloquent 2001 meditation on unlikely childhood dreams. Key line: “For anyone who’s on the downside of advantage and relying purely on courage, it’s possible.” Key bit of body language: The Michelangelo-esque head lift on the word “possible.” - Thanks, Allison

Rope of Silicon: UPDATE: Ridley Scott’s ‘Nottingham’ Gets New Title and New Story Details

- From Scott's MTV interview on the changes in Nottingham (Robin Hood - see yesterday) - "So, rather than the Robin-vs.-Sheriff showdowns we’ve come to expect from “Robin Hood” movies, Scott has instead employed the history of the time to make an entire country the villain. “It is from France. It is the French,” he insisted. “The villain is much bigger in that sense; much more important, and much more dangerous.” -- Wikipedia: Who were the Normans?

February 17

MTV: Interview with Ridley Scott -- "...That statement is notable, not only in that those first two projects are moving forward, but that “Nottingham” has now officially been renamed to reflect its lead character. “Oh yes, I think we are just going to call it ‘Robin Hood’,” Scott revealed. “We start in almost 2 months.” (lots more onthe film in the interview) - Thanks, Rene, Pat, Steph

The Charlotte Observer: Celebrity bands: The good, the not-so bad and the awful -- Russell Crowe: Most folks probably wouldn't immediately peg Aussie actor Crowe as the sensitive artistic sort, but that's exactly the side of himself he revealed in 30 Odd Foot of Grunts (later renamed The Ordinary Fear of God), which has released four albums. Crowe's voice is hit-and-miss, but the small success enjoyed by single “Sail Those Same Oceans” suggests he could make the music gig full-time if he'd like. (www.gruntland.com) - Thanks, Amey, Allison

Film.com: BOL DVD Review - Well, the DVD is out and lo and behold there isn't a special feature on the disc. Not one. Not a commentary, a deleted scene, not even a trailer. Which leads me to believe they have some kind of special feature in the works and that this is just the bare bones theatrical cut. Either that or Warner Bros. has had a sudden aversion to special features on their standard edition DVDs (Nights in Rodanthe as I wrote about here was also special feature free.) Perhaps they're just hosing regular dvd watchers in support of Blu-ray. If I were a betting man I would bet that a special edition release is right around the corner somewhere for this. But this one is definitely worth checking out. Solid, entertaining and some really great moments. Just not as epic a film as you'd expect from these three and the writer of The Departed.

The Daily Telegraph: Squeegee a Crowe pleaser - WHAT do you get the mega-star bloke who has just about everything? When you're Russell Crowe, it can be as simple as his very own squeegee man to be on hand to clean his windows when watching his Rabbitohs team. - Thanks, Steph

CGee Report - The Bunnies Game in Coffs Harbour

Related: Times Online - Paul Bettany: ascent of the quiet actor - Then there was A Beautiful Mind, on which he met Connelly, which was Russell Crowe’s first film after winning the Oscar for Gladiator. “Everyone was looking at that, wondering whether he could deliver,” he says. “I got noticed only because I was in his shadow.” Crowe suggested him for his 2003 film, Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World. He spent months learning how to play the cello and become Crowe’s sidekick on and off screen. “There wasn’t much drinking time,” he says. “We had to learn four pieces on the cello and violin and practised each night. It sounded at first as if we were doing something nasty to a squirrel.” - Thanks to all

Bette Davis (1938-1942) and Greer Garson (1941-1945) both were nominated for a remarkable five straight years (two of which actually overlapped). Marlon Brando, Jennifer Jones, Al Pacino, Thelma Ritter and Elizabeth Taylor each had runs lasting for four years. And Glenn Close, Gary Cooper, Russell Crowe, Jane Fonda, William Hurt, Deborah Kerr, Jack Nicholson, Gregory Peck, Spencer Tracy and Renee Zellweger each appeared for three years in a row. - Thanks, Allison

CGee's report on The Museum Of Interesting Things

From Jo Yo: Baz Bamingboye's column in Daily Mail U.K. -- "Paul Giamatti is in negotiations to play Friar Tuck in Ridley Scott's film Nottingham opposite Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett. The main players in this movie, Crowe and Scott wouldn't mind NOT having to do this project, but so many millions have been spent in pre-production and building of sets, it was to have been shot last year, that they're duty bound to complete it. --- Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck, Rachel McAdams and Helen Mirren, who star in the big screen version of State of Play, a scorching, loosely based film adaption of Paul Abbott's B.B.C. series. Crowe plays the Washington journalist who tries to help his congressman pal Ben Affleck after Affleck's mistress is murdered. I saw an uncompleted version of director Kevin MacDonald's film and it totally held my attention. I enjoyed it all, particulary Mirren's hard-boiled editor.'So, where are we? Was he ****ing her or not?"   she asks. Crowe. It was thrilling to watch a movie where journalists actually leave the office. Believe me, it doesn't happen that much in the real world any more.

Nine MSN: TV Tonight au -- Nine telethon expands across primetime -- The Prime Minister, Mr Kevin Rudd, and the Premier of Victoria, Mr John Brumby, will join the Australian cricket team, along with entertainers including Russell Crowe, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban; radio stars Hamish and Andy, and Merrick and Rosso; international models Miranda Kerr and Megan Gale; stars of the small screen Rove McManus, Dave Hughes, Kate Ritchie, Roy Billing, Martin Dingle Wall, Kat Stewart, Rodger Corser, Ben Mendelsohn, Molly Meldrum and Magda Szubanski to raise money for the victims of Victoria's killer fires. - Thanks, Steph

The First Post: Cohen gives $200,000 to fire victims -- Leonard Cohen (pictured), the legendary singer-songwriter, has donated A$200,000 to the victims of the Australian bushfires, which have resulted in more than 200 deaths. Cohen, 74, who is currently touring Australia, released a statement saying that he had was "shocked and deeply saddened” by the news of the tragedy. The 2009 Victorian Bushfire Fund now stands at A$28 million. But apart from the golfers Craig Parry and Nick O'Hern, who have pledged a total of A$200,000, no other big Australian names have yet dipped their hands in their pockets. No doubt it is only a matter of time before the actors Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe, to name but two, come forward.

The National Review: The Best Conservative Movies of the last 25 years -- Master and Commander (2003):This naval-adventure film starring Russell Crowe is based on the books of Patrick O’Brian, and here’s what A. O. Scott of the New York Times said in his review: “The Napoleonic wars that followed the French Revolution gave birth, among other things, to British conservatism, and Master and Commander, making no concessions to modern, egalitarian sensibilities, is among the most thoroughly and proudly conservative movies ever made. It imagines the [H.M.S.] Surprise as a coherent society in which stability is underwritten by custom and every man knows his duty and his place. I would not have been surprised to see Edmund Burke’s name in the credits.” - Thanks, Allison

Jacksonville.com: A hard act to follow - "This method hasn’t changed for me and in 2002, I felt like Russell Crowe gave the performance of his life in A BEAUTIFUL MIND, a film, which wound up winning Best Picture. And anyone that watched this film clearly could see it was great for pretty much one reason and one reason only, Crowe. Sure, Ron Howard was magnificent behind the camera and Jennifer Connelly only added to the greatness of Crowe, but it was still Crowe’s work that made this film what it was. It’s that simple,.." - Thanks, Allison, Pat

Cinematical: Will Cate Blanchett save Nottingham? - "Does it make me a bad person that I couldn't have been happier when Sienna Miller and Nottingham decided to go their separate ways? Nothing personal, but I wasn't envisioning Miller fairing too well up against a dramatic heavy like Russell Crowe. Luckily, for those of out there who still think that Nottingham has a chance of being a darn good flick, there is a light on the horizon and her name is Cate Blanchett. During an event for the London Film Critics' Circle Awards, newly arrived Nottingham cast member, Mark Strong told the UK Telegraph, "I think Cate Blanchett is set to take the Maid Marian part," Strong went on to sing the praises of the Aussie actress and told the Telegraph, "She is a wonderful actress and it would make it a much classier film if she was in it." -- Amen to that brother."

Related -- Variety: Directors look back at their first films -- "...In making "Frost/Nixon," Howard took another look at his dialogue-driven "The Paper," and he also recalled the scene in "Cinderella Man" where Paul Giamatti seems to be in the boxing ring. "There's a visual connectivity there, and I thought about that when I was cutting away to the Frost observation room and the Nixon room," he says." Howard's greatest lesson, however, was learned on his very first film: "You have in your mind what you want to achieve on a certain day -- ideas you're sure about," he says. "But as the film comes together, it shows you how wrong you were. That's cold when you have to face that."

Chris O'Conner's Blog - mds 2010 traning blog: The latest film to arrive is called 'Nottingham' and is a Robin Hood film seen through the perspective of the Sheriff of Nottingham - directed by Ridley Scott. Apparently Russell Crowe is playing both the parts of Robin Hood and the Sheriff - that should be interesting! It's early days in the production and it's mainly the film's art dept who are on location at the moment - designing a small village and a castle which will be built over the next month or so.
