The UK Mail: Russell Crowe actually raises a smile (gasp!) after a joyous reunion with his wife and sons at LA airport - [Ignore the snarky text] Thanks, CGee

EW.com: Inside Movies: 'The Man With the Iron Fists' trailer: Best promo of all time? Or just of the century so far? -- If, that is, what you want from a trailer is lashings of martial arts mayhem, an ornamental fan whose ornaments are an array of knives, the line “Power belongs to no one until it is seized through sex and violence,” wrestler Dave Batista turning into brass, Crowe sporting some of the most excellent facial fuzz this side of a Frank Zappa impersonators’ convention, and the sight of RZA himself not only breaking an anvil with one of his big ol’ iron fists but also, literally, punching someone’s eye out.... But this trailer puts me in mind of a different Sam Raimi movie, The Quick and the Dead — partly because of the participation of Crowe and partly because, like Raimi’s berserk Western, the result looks to be utterly and — we hope — wonderfully bonkers.

I Watch Stuff: 'Man with the Iron Fists' Trailer: Lucy Liu Finally Does Action More Ridiculous Than 'Charlie's Angels 2' "For something called The Man with the Iron Fists, you would really think there'd be more gauntleted pummeling in this first trailer for the RZA's directorial debut. Outside of a brief opening sequence--in which RZA gives sort of a Metallurgy 101 first-day-of-class intro, explaining that to make weapons you need, you know, like, metal, and some heat--the director/star/Wu-Tang Clansman and his metal hands stay largely out of the picture in this red-band preview. But what the film lacks in a man with iron fists, it largely makes up for with a Lucy Liu with a knife fan, a strangely-game Russell Crowe cowboy with a pistol knife, and a WWE wrestler with golden flesh. If you couldn't tell from the inclusion of those elements, the movie is all-the-way ridiculous. But it's also hard to deny it looks like it will be pretty entertaining, for at least one reason or another."

Russell Crowe ‏@russellcroweI haven't been approached by anyone to play Rupert Murdoch. That's just a beat up.I am off to build a boat. Will be gone for quite some time.

From Marilee: Mary, much as I and many others would love a peek at the Man with the Iron Fist trailer, I don't believe Russian download sites are safe to recommend.  .ru downloads are notorious for containing malware and spy bots, which are installed on unsuspecting computers during the downloads. It's not so bad to just visit and look at a Russian site, it's downloading content that may be problematical. This is just a heads up to things I've heard from cyber friends who had problems and warned me and others.

Casting is about to get underway for the film based on Good Times, Bad Times, the memoirs of former Sunday Times editor Sir Harold Evans. The Independent: Where ravens dare...Meet Mr T, the Hollywood veteran making his London debut in 'Dr Dee' -- At the tender age of 15, this artist already has a string of Hollywood hits to his name, having enjoyed big screen roles alongside Charlize Theron in Snow White and the Huntsman, and Robert Downey Jnr in Sherlock Holmes. Most recently, he filmed scenes with Russell Crowe (no relation) and Sacha Baron Cohen for the forthcoming cinematic adaptation of musical Les Misérables. - Thanks, CGee

Hugh Jackman ‏@RealHughJackman Filming for les miserables has finished!!! Thank you Tom and the whole crew! Amazing. 24601 signing out!

From Mary Anne at TRC: TRC has added a new section for Russell's Films, which includes photos, production notes, and other stuff as it occurs to us  :)

[a little late, but a good read] - The Australian: Ridley Scott epic Gladiator gets thumbs up -- ALL those who found themselves a trifle underwhelmed by Prometheus can see Ridley Scott at the top of his directorial form in Gladiator (Saturday, 8.30pm, Seven, Sydney and Brisbane; 10pm, Perth), his great robe-and-sandals epic with Russell Crowe. Scott took a venerable Hollywood genre and shook out the cobwebs and cliches: there are no orgies, no javelin contests, no sybaritic bath-house sequences, no degenerate elderly senators with bunches of grapes, not even a chariot race. Crowe is magnificent as the Roman general Maximus, who is betrayed by the emperor's jealous son (Joaquin Phoenix), sold into slavery and trained as a gladiator. Plenty of action and spectacle, with an intelligent script and some superbly choreographed gladiatorial scenes - all of it gripping and suitably bloodthirsty. - Thanks, Allison

Aceshowbiz.com: Another Possible Plot Detail of 'Man of Steel' Revealed -- Multiple sources revealed to Comic Book Movie that [SPOILER ALERT!] "a good portion" of "Man of Steel" will "take place on a war torn Krypton." It is, however, still unclear how much time will be spent on the planet or on the war itself. Should the sources'information be true, fans could expect to see a lot of scenes involving Russell Crowe's Jor-El in the upcoming film. - Thanks, Caliope

From Caliope: Film industry Network: Tropfest New York: stars endorse largest short film festival -- Russell Crowe endorsement:

“Tropfest has unearthed some spectacular talent in Australia, individuals that might have gone unheralded and unnoticed. It has proven to be an excellent training ground and stepping stone. At it’s core ,it is people with an idea and a camera and the energy and love to bring that idea to the screen.”

Russell on his process in preparing to film - From Charlie Rose a few years ago:

From Cgee re The Rabbitohs: "This is the type of game you hate to lose. Souths has never been better in defense; they played with such determination against a relentless Brisbane attack. They never gave up, never dropped their heads just kept doing the job. But scoring opportunities were too few and far between in spite of a great effort. Brisbane Broncos defeat South Sydney 26-12." -- And From Nicole: "Despite losing 26-12 vs Broncos , we saw great Bunnies tonight. Very physical presence, great defence. They led 6-4 at half time thanks to a terrific try from Mc Queen. Broncos took the lead at the beginning of the second half. But a brilliant 80m run & try gave the lead again to SSFC 12-10. Unfortunately the Broncos were stronger at the end, luck on their side too. They scored their last try at the 79th mn. It's an unfair final score for South"

Backstage.com: Casting Calls for Noah

Entertainment MSNBC: Falling stars: Is big fame over for Tom Hanks, Reese Witherspoon? A bold claim sits in the midst of a lengthy new piece in The New Yorker about Ben Stiller, "Funny is Money: Ben Stiller and the dilemma of modern stardom." The author, Tad Friend, contends that "plenty of people who were big stars 10 years ago now are not." Fair enough on the surface, right? Well, take a look at the list Friend posits: Keanu Reeves, Mel Gibson, Demi Moore, Tom Hanks, Reese Witherspoon, Russell Crowe, Nicolas Cage, John Travolta. ...

Crowe is a slightly more complicated case: "3:10 to Yuma" in 2007 definitely didn't light the box office on fire (it grossed only $70 million worldwide) but doesn't the film's two Academy Award nominations count for something? (On a side note, Crowe does have nearly half a million Twitter followers. If Crowe and the studios he's working with can harness this following for any of the five films he's got coming up between now and 2014, maybe his star rises somewhat?) - Thanks, Allison

Gold Derby: Our own Tom O'Neil plays Oscar poker with Sasha Stone and Jeffrey Wells: "15 hours ago Awards Daily's Sasha Stone, Goldderby.com's Tom O'Neil and I kicked the 2012 Oscar ball around. Our consensus: 'Les Miserables,' 'Beasts of the Southern Wild' and 'Lincoln' in the Best Picture lead. And yet Tom and Sasha delivered some Lincoln pushback based on two factors: (a) Daniel Day-Lewis's Lincoln might be too quirky or extreme in some way, and (b) director Steven Spielberg might Spielberg-ize it -- he might not be able to muster the discipline to 'get out of the way' and just let the material play on its own terms." HOLLYWOOD ELSEWHERE

Rabbitohs Win - From CGee: It was a hard hitting game against a struggling Parramatta Eels team. Souths was confident in attack and played smart, solid defense. Adam Reynolds perfect in his kicking and ran down Chrissy Sandow to save a try.  Parra never really threatened and Souths win 24-6  -- And From Nicole: Great work tonight from the Rabbitohs who led the game from the beginning. Merritt opened the score at the 6th minute. It was 12-0 at half time and as soon as the second half started Dylan Farell scored. That was 18-0. Paramata Eels managed to score later but our Bunnies showed them how to play tonight. Adam Raynolds, running very very fast, saved a try just before the line. Luke Burgess was denied a try but 3mn before the end Michael Crocker scored for South Sydney and it was 24 - 6 at full time. Despite having an elbow injury, Greg Inglis went on playing. Not sure he'll play next week though.

From way back [ It's a long way from Les Mis!] -- Blood Brothers page - Rough Cut Q & As LA Confidential’s Russell Crowe gets scruffy, gruff and scatty. -- Published September 18, 1997 -- "I was offered the role of Mickey in Blood Brothers. It’s a unique piece because it is the most depressing musical ever written for the theatre...the big dance number in the middle is about unemployment." - Thanks to Pam for reminding me.

The Examiner: Upcoming 2012 Films: Best New Trailers - Les Miserables: An anticipated film version of the worldwide hit musical set during the French Revolution. It’s a wonderful story, a wonderful musical, and it helms a wonderful cast, starring Hugh Jackman, Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried, Anne Hathaway, Eddie Redmayne and more. It’s only a teaser trailer, but I’m almost certain that the film will be fantastic, premiering December 14th. - Thanks, Caliope

On TV Tonight: 8 P.M. (Sundance) A GOOD YEAR (2006) Russell Crowe, below, reunites with the director Ridley Scott (“Gladiator”) in this celebration of French food and wine, adapted from Peter Mayle’s 2004 novel about Max Skinner, an aggressive London bond trader who inherits a small vineyard from his Uncle Henry (Albert Finney). Soon enough Max (Mr. Crowe), soothed by the memories of summers spent amid the grapevines, has morphed into a bon vivant who has fallen for a beautiful bistro owner (Marion Cotillard). Then a young Californian (Abbie Cornish) shows up and announces that she is his uncle’s illegitimate daughter — which would make her Henry’s true heir. Writing in The Times, Stephen Holden called the film “an innocuous, feel-good movie” and advised viewers “to make a reservation at an upscale French restaurant immediately after seeing the film or risk going home feeling deprived.”

From Avril: I thought those who couldn't see it might like a summary of the hour long documentary which showed on tv here tonight called "Incredible Stories" about Russell's friend Charlie Allan and his medieval fort project at Duncarron. We were shown clips from both Gladiator and Robin Hood and Russell was interviewed and talked about his friendship with Charlie, with anecdotes from the movie set etc. Russell said that Clanranald extras always stood out from the rest because of their dedication and professionalism, which made his job easier. They talked about Russell managing to secure the battering ram from Robin Hood for Duncarron and also paying out of his own pocket top have it shipped to Scotland. Charlie said about Russell's gesture that he was "totally gobsmacked and "wanted to hug the guy [Russell]". Russell also spoke very poignantly about the value of young Scottish kids getting the means to recognise their heritage through the aims of Duncarron. There were also clips of Charlie's band Saor Patrol, 3 drummers, a guitarist and Charlie on the bagpipes. They showed gigs from the band's tour of Germany, with enthusiastic crowds enjoying the traditional music. Best of all was the "spot the Bunny" game I played as I watched the programme. Every second frame seemed to show somebody or other in Bunnies gear. Charlie himself wore a Bunnies cap and a Bunnies sweatshirt for most of the programme, as did many others popping up in shots. Great publicity for the Rabbitohs!!

Off topic, but I had to post - For lovers of The Wire - So funny!

IndieWire - Anne Thompson: Now and Then: Wes Anderson and Ridley Scott Are Two Auteurs Whose Best Work Is in the Past -- "...The question is a particularly potent one if such success came early, as it did for Ridley Scott. Three of his first seven features, "Alien" (1979), "Blade Runner" (1982), and "Thelma & Louise" (1991) are rightly regarded as classics. If "Prometheus" is not quite a return to form, despite its close ties to the exquisitely terrifying "Alien," it at least suggests a step in the right direction — away from the middling portliness of everything he's made since "Gladiator."
