Deadline.com: Mike Fleming Interviews ‘Broken City’ Helmer Allen Hughes On His First Solo Film - DEADLINE: Lumet always had a strong corrupt antagonist. What was the challenge in getting Russell Crowe to sign on? He wasn’t doing a lot of movies at the time.
HUGHES: We had a heavy who is part King Of New York, part Gordon Gekko. It was a challenge to get Russell. We knew we needed a movie star, but Russell’s a different kind of movie star: he’s also a great fucking actor, you know. And there are all these legendary stories about Russell, so I was anxious to sit down with him and see how we would jell. We sat down and I saw the way his mind was working, the zone he was in as he was just getting into crazy physical shape. We went a few rounds and we were so clearly on the same page. There was a kinship there I didn’t expect. And the idea of teaming him with Mark Wahlberg had both of us excited. - Thanks, Judy

I turned to my companion and said that this is a rare occasion when those words more than match the deed. Indeed, this movie is the most thrilling film I have seen in many, many years, perhaps ever." NY Times: The Carpetbagger: What’s in the Running This Year? You Tell Us --- "...Most pundits have “Argo,” “Lincoln,” “Les Misérables” and “Silver Linings Playbook” in the top spots, in metrics that are sure to shift as the season progresses. But let’s not just take the experts’ word for it – what’s the fun in that? Put your pick for best picture in the comments now, and earn bragging rights next year."

From Lynda: A new blog from Alan [Doyle], written from his trailer on the "Winter's Tale" set - "...The other night I had a chance to chat with a bunch of the cast from Les Miserables just after they had attended a cast screening of the soon to be released film. They and everyone else were literally glowing from the experience. I spoke to a few hardened film folks as well. Folks that had nothing to do with this production who were positively thrilled by the film. It’s been a long while since I’ve been this eager to see a movie. Really happy for Russell and all the gang from the other night. Hope to get to one of the Premiere’s and hope it hits a homerun at the Box Office."

From The Sun: Russell Crowe shows his scars on set of new movie[ed note: Great imagees of RC as Pearly. What a suit!] He added: “I haven’t seen mine since late September. Maybe 40 days with them for the year. Won’t happen again.” And chatting to a follower about his future homecoming the star showed his soppy side. He wrote: “I like arriving at dawn and being in the kitchen making breakfast when they come downstairs...sleepy joy and loving cuddles.”

The Daily Beast: Les Miserables’ Is New Frontrunner for Best Picture Oscar -- “There is prodigious strength in sorrow and despair,” Dickens wrote in A Tale of Two Cities, and Jackman, an actor who seems to be at his best in period dramas (see: The Prestige), does a fine job capturing Valjean’s brutish exterior and inner turmoil. All the other actors live up to the task as singers—including Crowe, whose performance as Javert approaches Jesus Christ Superstar-levels of gusto - Thanks, Steph

Russell Crowe makes a very convincing Javert. His voice doesn’t always do the character’s songs justice. But I liked him enormously.

ed note: I do love RC as a villain! Saw the trailer for Les Mis on a BIG screen at the movie theater before watching "Lincoln"- it looked gritty and real and the singing became part of the characters - not outside them (can't wait for Xmas Day and another Murph review), as indeed Lincoln became in the hands of Daniel Day Lewis. Lewis found the soul of Lincoln and brought him to vivid life. - A double treat for the afternoon.

From Mary Ann: TRC has the images of the articles in the November issue of Total Film which might be of interest to Crowe fans.  There's a nice interview with Hugh Jackman, and a few other items - here

NY Times: Les Miz screenings in LA and NY with an eye toward the Oscars - "On Friday, Universal’s publicity team circulated word of a lightning strike by its “Les Misérables,” which opens in commercial theaters on Christmas Day, with a series of six Los Angeles-area screenings in about eight hours on Nov. 24. The film’s director, Tom Hooper, will attend all of them — and this, after he executes a similar maneuver in New York on Nov. 23, where the screenings cluster in more manageable Manhattan." - Thanks, Tamara

hughontheblueboard.com: Les Mis Pics by Annie Leibovitz. - [larger size of image on site] Thanks, Steph - Here is the picture of RC at Vogue Magazine - Will of Steel -- “For the story to have any drama, you need to cast a guy who you genuinely feel could go toe to toe with Hugh Jackman and get the better of him,” says director Tom Hooper of casting Russell Crowe as Valjean’s relentless

javert Liebovitz

From Vogue again - The article on Anne Hathaway - Leap of Faith - By all accounts the cast, which rehearsed for nine weeks prior to shooting, was unusually close. “Everybody was really pulling for each other on this,” Hathaway recalls. “And I think that came from the fact that we were all doing something so different and so potentially disastrous.” It helped that Crowe threw parties at his apartment on Friday nights. You may not know that Crowe got his start in musical theater (check out his performance of “Hot Patootie—Bless My Soul” from a 1987 Melbourne production of The Rocky Horror Show on YouTube); he has also been the front man for a series of rock bands over the years. For his weekly get-togethers, Crowe made sure that everyone had enough to drink and then gathered them around the piano to perform. Some of the highlights of those nights were Hathaway’s account of “The Man That Got Away,” Seyfried’s rendition of Robert Plant and Alison Krauss’s “Sister Rosetta Goes Before Us,” and a group version of, yes, Adele’s “Someone Like You.” “Considering how miserable I was on set every day, some of my happiest memories are from those sing-alongs,” Hathaway says. “After that, once we got in front of the cameras, it didn’t feel weird bursting into song around each other.” - Thanks, Cindy

The NY Times Review: Manohla Dargis - The Swordsman’s Arms Dealer of Choice (Wires Not Included) - ‘The Man With the Iron Fists,’ Directed by and Starring RZA - "...Mr. Crowe, who swans about as a rogue called Jack Knife, looks amused throughout, and it’s no wonder, since about all he has to do is bed multiple women and gut an occasional foe in a movie that can feel like a private party."

NY Times:(Great review for RC's co-star in AG)- Life Takes Nose Dive, and Settles Into an Abyss ‘Flight’ Stars Denzel Washington as an Alcoholic Pilot

LA Times Article - TMWTIF: And Russell Crowe, RZA’s Oscar-winning homie (plus costar in “American Gangster” and Haggis’ 2010 crime drama “The Next Three Days”), agreed to sign onto the project. He portrays gleefully malicious English soldier Jack Knife, the guy with a whirling machete-gun, a mysterious agenda and a libido the size of Mt. Everest who engages in a menage a quatre with three ladies of the evening in a custom-designed S&M boudoir. “I didn’t know that side of him,” Roth says, “but obviously RZA did, this fun, goofy side of Russell Crowe. He can actually be very silly. That’s what we were able to bring out of him with this wild character.” - Thanks, Kris C

Movie Web: Two more Les Mis posters

NY Post: Dancing off Sandy’s wrath Giuseppe Cipriani and son Ignazio threw a lavish bash at Cipriani 42nd Street on Wednesday night, as Halloween was canceled across the region and downtown Manhattan remained cloaked in darkness. Stars including Leonardo DiCaprioRussell CroweDita Von TeeseJay-Z and Beyoncé joined the bash, which Cipriani reps say went on until well after 5 a.m. and was not for charity.

Examiner Review - TMWTIF: More interesting is the presence of Russell Crowe as Jack Knife, an opium-addicted soldier that RZA says was inspired by his late cousin, Ol' Dirty Bastard. Crowe does occasionally seem to be channeling the "unique" rapper, bursting into drunken and garbled speeches usually precluded by someone getting ripped up by his specialized blade. It was always weird that Crowe was even a part of the film, but he seems to be having the most fun of all, content to be the big fish splashing around in a much smaller pond.

The Hollywood Reporter Review: TMWTIF: Fun does come from the wildly imaginative weapons designs, Liu's crafty manipulations of everyone who sets foot in her house of pleasure, Crowe's sporting holiday in a role that would have been relished by his late Gladiator co-star Oliver Reed, the cramming of so many Asian martial arts hallmarks/cliches into one scenario and the weird conjunction of Chinese setting and mostly hip-hop-style soundtrack. Production values are certainly better than those on most of the films RZA idolized in his youth, while his visual handling is more industrious than stylish.

IAR PRESS CONFERENCE COVERAGE: 'THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS' - ...We talked about the character which is all stuff that RZA and I had talked and then I realized how willing Russell Crowe was to go crazy. And we're like, 'Alright let's do Marlon Brando and the Missouri BreaksBen Kingsley and Sexy Beast, let's do something that's so completely fucking nuts that no one else could've done and it's something completely out of character for him to which you're used to seeing.' I remember the first day of shooting. He was like it was weird when you're throwing a table at him, he's got a knife that shoots an imaginary blade and splits it and he's like, 'This is not normally what I do.' He's like, 'I do A Beautiful Mind. And he watched the playback and he's going, 'Do it again! Throw the table again!' And he just went for it. It was great that RZA created an environment where Russell wasn't carrying a whole movie, he was part of an ensemble, but the way we thought of it was like a super group." - Thanks, Allison

EW.com: This week's cover - Our annual holiday movie preview -- 'Les Mis' - "Les Mis comes to the screen 25 years after its Tony-winning Broadway debut, 150 years after the publication of Victor Hugo’s novel, and 180 years after the Paris Uprising depicted in the story, in which a mob of students and the impoverished lashed out at a ruling class they felt had neglected them. Despite being rooted in those distant eras, the film’s themes of greed and indifference that could be ripped from the rhetoric of the presidential election about the growing divide between haves and have-nots. “We’re not making some Masterpiece Theatershow. This is not just some period movie. This is something that’s relevant. Classic literature, classic stories like Les Miserables stick around for a reason,” says star Hugh Jackman." - Thanks, Allison
