From an early version of the script: Mae: "What kind of world is it where a man has to shovel coal all night for 60 cents but can get his face beat in for 70 dollars?" Jim: Think of all the people who'd give anything for 70 bucks. Mae: I've never told you not to fight! Jim: (Softly) Easy Mae: (Trying to calm down) You're not even healed up yet. Jim: Got to take 'em when they come. It's not like the old days.
