Chip Beef at the Murphsplace Forum thread on CM --- Paddy Considine came this close to becoming a "hamburger Paddy" on the night they filmed a Central Park burning shantytown scene. Mr. Considine, playing the part of Jim Braddock's best friend, was called upon to lay perfectly still while all hell broke loose around him. The actor didn't have any problem with the shack being set on fire behind him. Nor did he have any problem with the horde of extras racing about in a well-rehearsed state of panic. His only misgiving with the scene was the sheep. The stampeding herd of sheep that the wrangler set free at the beginning of each take. The sheep that came perilously close to running all over Paddy as he lay ever so vulnerably in the dirt. Paddy did it though.Talk about dedication. You can bet your life those sheep weren't about to pull their punches.

Paddy alerted the wrangler that two of the sheep narrowly missed running over him during one of the takes.

The wrangler, in all seriousness, asked Paddy which two sheep they were. He actually expected Paddy to identify the two offending sheep from the flock of at least eight running around the actor in the scene. All the sheep looked alike: same colour, same size.

Russell Crowe didn't miss a beat. Keeping a deadpan face he went on to describe the two sheep to the wrangler : " About this tall, little wool jacket."

The sheep wrangler led his "children" around by shaking a bucket of feed and saying "Na Na Na Na Na"

It became a game with a couple of the extras standing nearby to come up with a song every time the wrangler repeated his sheep mantra.

There was 'Na na na na! Na na na na! Hey! Hey! Good-bye!' and 'Na na na Na na na na Na na na Hey Jude' and The Muppet Song that goes 'Na Na Na Na , Dee Dee Dee Dee...' Well, you get the idea.

4/30/04 - Hello, I worked as an extra on the cinderella man set, and I am glad they got the guy that took the pictures!!! It was definitely a breach of contract. I have worked on several productions and have not been on one set that was this well organized. Ron Howard is truly a nice guy in person from what I could tell, although I did not get a chance to meet him. I think he may have saw me through one of the eyes of the cameras (3). From what I could tell Ron gave everyone there a chance to get into the shot at one point in time or another, of course lots will be edited, however I thought it was a good gesture. Everything was shot with handhelds and steadycams to my surprise, and I think the movie goers will be in for a real treat when the movie is released. Russell Crowe seemed quite down to earth, and I can see why he is considered such a great actor. The rest of the cast and crew were easy to work with, everything looked authentic and it was a very interesting experience. The days were fairly long and Ron had us on set when we were not required alot of the time, and I think he did that so any curious people such as myself would have a chance to see first hand how the pros go about getting a good movie shot. Have a look for me when the movie comes out, I am the guy wearing a black suit jacket and vest with grey pants and a greenish hat. Oh yea, I am not really a chain smoker. -- Enjoy the film - JW
12-hour day. Fans in the stands having the choice to either cheer on Braddock or call him a bum, being allowed to shout out 'unscripted crowd noises'. Most of the extras (approximately 400) have been seated on the floor surrounding the ring. But scattered throughout the seats throughout the arena are inflatable dolls! Howard may not like to use CGI for his background, but he has no problem with vinyl 'torsos' with human face masks!!! And there are hundreds of these dressed bodies scattered throughout the stands. - Anon scooper
Hi Murph

This is my "diary" of the casting call for Cinderella Man, it's short and sweet. I arrived shortly after 10:00 a.m. lined up for about 10 min. I was handed an application form and an information sheet for successful applicants, they directed me to a large room set up with tables and chairs. I filled out the application which asked for my name, address, telephone # and my height, weight, dress size, etc. Then went into a smaller room where I had my picture taken with a digital camera. They had taken the application and marked a number on it which I held while they took the picture. They handed me back the information sheet and thanked me for attending and that was it. The whole process took about 20 minutes. Successful applicants will be contacted between January 26th and February 29th. So wish me luck, I will let you know if I am one of the lucky ones. - Ann
