American Gangster - An Extra's Report

This was sent to me thanks to a fan:

Yesterday, my friend and I spend the entire day as extras in AG. We filmed at the Nassau Coliseum which was doubling for Madison Square Garden. The event being filmed yesterday was the Ali/Frazier fight which in the film Frank Lucas attends. I was lucky enough to be chosen as one of the 10 ushers who leads the Vips into the Garden. I had 2 costumes, one of which was a grey jacket that had "The Fight" across the back of it. My friend was an extra in the arena crowd scenes. I think I just might have made some screen time, which would be a joy. Im hoping.

The day started at 7am and ended at 11:30pm. I found Ridley Scott to be a no nonsense director, who knows what he wants and gets it in a very professional manner. The entire crew was just wonderful. I was lucky enough to be in a scene with both Denzel and Russell.

It was a learning experience watching these 2 Oscar winners at work. They were just amazing and I was proud to be in the same scene with them.

There were many celebrity look-a-likes for this shoot and it was great, I also saw the real Frank Lucas on the set as well. As I was doing my thing my friend was filming his and he ran into Bruno, who was there. He knows him through a mutual friend and Bruno was asking where this mutual friend was, but she wasn't there, she prefers to leave the acting to us. I wont tell you the gist of the scene as not to give anything away, but a lot of action was covered yesterday. There were several hand held cameras and about 3 standing ones. At the end of the shoot Russell made a point of shaking hands with a few of the extras, I believe last night was a wrap for him on the film. It was a very long day, but truly a wonderful experience. This is going to be a great film!
