Write a Haiku - image the way a photograph does

Haiku is a very simple form of Japanese poetry that evokes strong feelings in its readers. Before trying to write haiku, it's a good idea to look at some examples that others have written. Use a book of haiku poetry or do a simple search of haikus on the Internet. After you have studied several examples, follow these simple rules to create your own Haiku:

Syllable Patterns: Haiku traditionally have seventeen short sounds divided into three lined of a fixed five-seven-five pattern. You can allow some flexibility in the 5-7-5 syllable pattern, trying patterns like 4-6-4 and 3-5-3. An example of the 5-7-5 pattern:

Soft and shiny grass
Pushing up through dirt so moist
Spring is on its way

Subject Matter: Traditionally, Haikus are about simple, everyday experiences with nature. Trees, flowers, mountains, seas, the sky, and the seasons are all common subjects for haikus.

Expression: A haiku should share a certain point in time, usually a moment of emotional awareness, with the reader. Without actually describing an emotion, such as joy, anger, or awe, the haiku should make the reader feel that emotion through the description of a situation, or point in time.

Tense: Try to use the present tense to involve your reader in the here and now. Present tense works best to capture a mental image the way a photograph does.

Writing Rules: There are no firm rules regarding capitalization or punctuation when writing haikus. Rhyme is not used unless it happens accidentally.
