William Mulhall's painting of Russell as poet Patrick Kavanaugh

When William was delivering a lecture on Patrick Kavanagh before rapt audience at the Kavanagh Centre in Inniskeen recently he was informed that Russell Crowe, who quoted Kavanagh's poem 'Sanctity' during his Bafta speech in 2002, was in discussions to play the legendary poet. The news fired William's imagination and led him to create this painting, imagining what Crowe would look like as Kavanagh and referencing some of the poet's most famous lines within the imagery. We present it now for your viewing pleasure.

Sanctity

To be a poet and not know the trade
To be a lover and repel all women
Twin ironies by which great saints are made
The agonising pincer-jaws of Heaven

-Patrick Kavanagh
