"There
probably isn't a more straight-shooting, stubborn and wickedly funny
guy in the acting business than this eccentric 36-year-old cattle farmer.
New Zealand-born and Australian based, Crowe is as manly tough as he
is sublimely intelligent."

"
So all of the people my
grandfather couldn't explain things to while he was alive were
visited. And that sent me off. Perhaps, angels? The gift of flight?
Perhaps it's just birds and we've manufactured it into this other
thing. So maybe the next stage after walking on the earth is the
gift of flight. Ah, it's all bullshit. But it's something to think
about, isn't it?"

"Film
sets just fascinated me. I always wanted to know what was behind
the doors...on film sets and TV sets nothing is behind them. But
I kept thinking, 'If I open one of these doors, sooner or later
there's going to be something behind there."

Uh?
How's my life changed? Well, golly, gosh. I'm the king of
frequent flyer miles. I don't get to spend enough time with
the people I love in the place I love. However, I'm an actor
and I've done it for a long time. And there's a certain amount
of a gypsy in the job. And it's the change of perspective
and the change of geography that actually makes my life interesting.
Otherwise it would be the same series of cow bums in a cattle
yard. It's funny, because you get accused of being "arrogant"
by some people because I seem to, in some people's viewpoint,
expect success. Thing is, I never actually expect success.
But it doesn't surprise me when it comes because I know how
much work I put into what I do. And in order to do complete
the fantasy of my life, which is to work at the highest level
in the art form I've chosen to work in, that means I've got
to keep getting on planes. And that means I've got to spend
X amount of time away. But look at the people I'm getting
to work with? Look at the experiences I'm having. Look at
the diversity of characters I'm getting to play. So I don't
have any complaints.

"Man,
I usually have a really hard time going to see the films I'm in
and it's only from the point of view that I tend to play some
very heavy emotional journeys and when I see it for the first
time I relive that and I can't see myself cry on screen without
becoming affected because it wasn't a trick. I still had to go
through that emotion in order for that to happen, that's what
I consider my job to be." -

You
know, the other ones I've made like The Quick and the Dead,
I enjoyed it, but it seems to me a lot of people didn't know
they were allowed to laugh. They thought they had to take
the western seriously and the director kept going [he winks
dramatically] and everyone was like, 'What the f--k's he doing
that for?' And, for whatever reason, even though a lot of
people have seen it now, it didn't exactly set the world on
fire at the time. And again, it's the sort of film that, I
know my mother's going to see it, but she's not really going
to dig it. And what did she say? She said, "Very nice, dear."

"I
end up being the cruise director on every movie I'm on. You've
got to keep a balance going with human beings [because] they
need to be appreciated.....I'm the world's worst tourist,
and once I learned that about myself, I tried to change. It
seems silly to go to these magnificent places and only see
the hotel room and set." - From Bobbie

If a song doesn´t have
a narrative it doesn´t have a point. Those ´oh baby´songs, they
fit in a certain place, but for me it´s got to be about the
story. I´m not a musician´s musician; I´m a storyteller."

"
But these songs, these are
about my life, about things I´ve experienced. Not that I really
believe anybody should give a shit, but I do and the way I express
the things that I´ve seen personally is songs. It´s an absolutely
valid creative expression, and it´s of no greater or lesser importance
than any performance I do as an actor. these are all reality-
based
stories."

“Oliver
[Reed] went out the way he lived his life, mate, you know? I’ve
known a lot of pissheads in my time, and maybe that sounds lacking
in eloquence to some people, but quite frankly, that’s what he
was… a lot of great actors have been… I’m just glad he’d done
enough of his part that they didn’t have to get another actor
– so this can be a memorial to him. I think it’s one of his best
performances in the past 10 years.”
