Re "The Bra Boys"
Regardless of how people want to couch it , I have been a Sydneysider for most of my life.
(I've also been around the world,to every continent in multiple places for long periods of time).
Atleast 23 years in this city, many more in Australia, ( +7 in Coff's Harbour )
I know this city.
I went to a number of different schools in different areas.
Later,I came of age as an artist here, in Sydney .Busked in the streets to beg a living. I've learnt the ways of other places, but this is (if I were to pick one) my town.
I did not enter into an association ill informed or without warning. I asked and received replies at a local, state and federal parliamentary level. This is not a criminal gang.
No doubt,as in all suburbs, crime happens in Maroubra.
No doubt there are extremes.
Australia and New Zealand share one principal commonality, we are a culture of clubs. Football,RSL ,RSA. SS and A, CWA , Leagues, Juniors, Bowling,Tennis,Golf...The Bra Boys extends from that.
First and foremost I am a story teller, I am not and will never likely be a surfer ( unless God changes his policy on gravity.)
Unlike Phil Noyce, I think this is a feature film. The story is not the doco.
I am acutely aware of the high probability that this causes some complications down the line, how this comes down is all about how the bra boys themselves..
Maroubra is in South Sydney.I love South Sydney.
One our of star players is a tattooed Bra Boy, (a matinee idol) John Sutton.
There are more than 300 familys who are affected by this talk.By these generalizations.
I represent. I believe in Mr Sutton Snr. His son is not a gangster.
Reni's mum know's the same about her boy..
This is not South L.A , this is South Sydney.
There is a spotlight on Maroubra, we will all get to see what the outcome of that spotlight is.
I think the story will come out of the spotlight.
It often does.
Always best to shine the light.
