6/2/06 -3 AM Girls The Daily Mirror: "HAS Russell Crowe decided his hardman image had to Go West? Judging by the droopy 'tache that's taken over his chops, [see image in left column] the Gladiator star could double as The Biker from camp 80s group The Village People. Still, Russ has an excuse. He was on the New York set of new film Tenderness on Wednesday. And anyway, at 42 he's too old for the YMCA." - Thanks, Zell

5/21/06 - Cinematical.com: "Laura Dern has joined the cast of Tenderness, the Russell Crowe-starring indie flick we told you about last month. The movie takes on the unsettling subject of a teenage serial killer and his romantic entanglement with a damaged runaway girl. Crowe plays a cop who tries to figure the kid out; it's not clear what role Dern will play. The movie begins shooting this week in New York." - Thanks, Amy (Maybe Lori's mother?)

5/18/06 - The Boston Globe: Word is Steven Foster's famous sons, Ben and Jon, are investors in their father's latest Boston restaurant venture. But don't expect the boys to be hanging around Match on Mass Ave. They're way too busy. Ben's got a big role in the summer blockbuster ''X-Men: The Last Stand" as well as in Nick Cassavetes's upcoming ''Alpha Dog." Meanwhile, Jon's shooting ''Tenderness" with Russell Crowe. . . .

5/18/06 - Comingsoon.net: "GreeneStreet's Russell Crowe-starrer Tenderness has also tapped more cast: Jon Foster (The Door in the Floor) and Sophie Traub (Daltry Calhoun). The film by John Polson (Hide and Seek) starts shooting May 22 and follows Foster as a violent teen whose life intertwines with a 16-year old runaway (Traub). Crowe plays a cop who sets out to unravel Foster's complicated past." - Thanks, Amy

At Showfax.com, calls for casting for Tenderness (Sides are portions of actual scripts that the actors have so they can study their lines. Casting sides are sides given for the use of people who are auditioning for roles of new characters.)

NineMSN: (From a November 2005 article on John Polson) -- "...A small but pivotal role in Tenderness will be played by an American actor of some note, he said. "It will be a guy in his 40s or 50s and a guy based on the East Coast (of the US)," he said. "It is a very important role. This movie is seen through the eyes of this guy."

4/22/06 - The Telegraph article

4/18/06 -- Coming Soon.net: Russell Crowe has signed to star in director John Polson's indie thriller Tenderness for New York-based GreeneStreet Films.... (In the book, the detective is called Jake Proctor. It looks like a name change in the film - to Lieutenant Cristofuoro)

Variety: "Russell Crowe has signed to star in director John Polson's indie thriller Tenderness for New York-based GreeneStreet Films. The actor will shoot the project for Polson (Hide and Seek) in May before heading into production on Universal's American Gangster in July, and then Baz Luhrmann's untitled period epic, opposite Nicole Kidman, early next year. Tenderness was adapted by screenwriter Emil Stern from the novel by Robert Cormier. The film follows a violent teenager, Eric, whose life intertwines with Lori, a 16-year-old runaway who can't resist his charm. Crowe will play Lieutenant Cristofuoro, a cop who sets out to unravel Eric's complex past. Tenderness will be produced by GreeneStreet president John Penotti, with Charles Randolph and Howard Meltzer. GreeneStreet's Fisher Stevens and Tim Williams are executive producing." - Thanks, Ivani

************************

The tired old detective whose life has become focused on catching a certain criminal is a familiar character in fiction and film, beginning with Javert in Victor Hugo's Les Miserables. Jake Proctor, obsessed with convicting Eric Poole for his murders, is a clear example of this literary type. Like Eric and Lori, he is driven by an overwhelming need. What has happened to Jake in the past that makes catching Eric so important to him? What would the meaning of this conviction be for him and what need would it satisfy? In what two ways is he ultimately disappointed?

Excerpt:

"You're a psychopath, Eric." The smoke came out of the lieutenant's mouth as if his words were stoked by an inner fire. "A monster."

Eric recoiled, as if the old cop had struck him in the face. Monster?

"Chances are you'll kill again. You know it and I know it."

Or was the old cop merely trying to taunt him? Trying to make him lose his cool? Don't let him do that. Monster was only a word, anyway. And those were the only weapons the lieutenant had: words.

"You're taking a lot for granted, Lieutenant," Eric said, the sound of his voice reassuring, establishing his control of the conversation once more. "You're making wild accusations. I wasn't even convicted by a jury. A judge heard my case. He didn't think I was a monster. He was very sympathetic. So were a lot of other people."

"Other people? Did you take a close look at them? Who they were, what they were? You killed your mother and father, Eric. In cold blood." Not sounding tired anymore.

Eric did not smile but his eyes gleamed. The lieutenant did not know about the others. Nobody knew about them.
