ed note: I was born in Pittsburgh, and my parents lived their for much of their adult lives - My mother, Helen Burrey Brown, lived in Mount Washington on Ulysses Street just off Glenview Avenue with her mother, sister and brother - on top of the heights, when it was an Irish Catholic enclave in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Her name is enscribed on a WW1 plaque in the vestibule of St Mary of the Mount Church. Each day she took the incline down the mountain to St Francis Hospital in the city for her nurses' training. She later taught at the hospital, now closed.

My father, Charles Brown, worked for a coal mining service company, and often told us stories of the times he went down the Pennsylvania mines with the miners.

My uncle, John Burrey was the purchasing agent for Carnegie Tech (Now Carnegie Mellon) for over 40 years. My mother and my Aunt Sarah were employed by Pogues, a local department store, when young.

And my cousin, Fabian Hoffman, was an end on the U of Pittsburgh football team that went to the Rose Bowl in 1937. He was drafted by the Steelers in the 13th round in the 1939 NFL draft
