Darrin's report on The Envelope's special screening of Yuma - 2/10/07

I got to go to The Envelope's special screening of Yuma tonight!  Had WAY lotsa fun seeing Big Bad Beautiful Ben on the big screen again.  Got there WAY too early since I allowed an extra hour for traffic and there was NONE (by the 405 freeway's standards, I actually maintained between 65 and 80 the whole way there!) and so managed to pick what I thought was the best seat in the house.

Seeing the movie again reminded me how much I just LOVE this film!  I love Mangold's filming style with all the close ups, and found myself forgetting to breathe with just how damned gorgeous Ben is.

The theatre was FULL, I'd even say "sold" out (it was a free screening, hence the quotes) and the audience was VERY into the movie.  Best reaction was someone gasping LOUDLY when Ben disappears to hide from the Indians when Dan takes him for his piss in the desert.  There was mass applause afterwards and I honestly felt it wasn't just cuz they knew James was in da house.  They all really enjoyed the film.

I managed to move down to the aisle seat in the fourth row before the Q&A started and got a pic.

Not that great, but I was trying to concentrate on what was being said.

So then Tom O introduced James, Christian and Ben and asked a few questions himself before opening it up to the audience.  There were absolutely no Russell snarks from him so that was cool and I didn't hafta throw my shoe at him.  The audience had plenty of questions, Mara will remember what was said better than I, but one cool thing I do remember was Tom asked Ben about "needing 30 seconds" before doing his final scene and Ben said James had a better start to that answer and James proceeded to tell how the last scenes were all filmed on the last day because there wasn't a studio to call and beg for more time, they simply had to be done that day.  So while the second half of the town was being dug out from under the 5 feet of snow that had just fallen, they were over by the train filming all those scenes and James felt like he was back in film school with all the pressure! LOL!  Poor guy.  So when Ben asked for his 30 seconds, James said yes but ONLY 30, was the point.  It all turned out really well, IMHO!

Oh and also James explained that Ben was getting the guard to undo his handcuffs that's why he didn't jump right out to help Dan.  And Christian explained how for Dan it really was just a second or two of enjoying his accomplishment that caused Dan to turn his back on Ben's gang cuz he just couldn't believe he'd actually done it.  I thought that was perfectly plausible.  James called those types of questions "IMDb dorky questions"! I wanted to ask what happened to Tucker's horse, but didn't get the idea to until it was last question.  That always happens to me!  LOL

So after they said good night, some of us went to the front to see if we could talk to Christian, but his wife took his arm and they moved to the exit.  It was really cute to see an A-List actor being given the wife treatment!  I mean that in the best possible way, you could just tell that as far as his wife was concerned the evening was done and it was time to go home!  Totally adorable.

Anyway, as I said, got to see Ben on the big screen once more before the DVD comes out next month and that was FINE, FINE, FINE!!!!
