But it wasn’t always thus. In fact, the first project that really set his mojo in motion was a dandy British TV series called “Chancer.” Series 1 is already out on DVD and Acorn Media releases Series 2 on Jan. 29. Owen plays a charming con man who is always just two millimeters away from the long arm of the law. The show is both sly and intriguing, a combination only the Brits seem to be able to accomplish. Owen remembers how his determination to be an actor wound him up on the bread line. “It wasn’t unusual to be unemployed in Coventry at that time,” he says. “There was a huge amount of unemployment in the U.K. generally, and I came from a town that was mostly car manufacturers, and they were all closing down and it was a very depressed time. I eventually applied to the Royal Academy (of Dramatic Arts) and amazingly got in. And I see that as almost a pivotal change - the key times in your life when you think things took a turn and that changed your life. You’re pretty trapped in a situation like that.
