"I've always been a huge Kevn Kinney and Drivin' N' Cryin' fan," Colvin said. "A couple of years ago this film producer asked me to write songs for a Russell Crowe film he was working on, and he specifically asked how I felt about writing with Kevn Kinney for the project.  "Of course I was completely game for that. So Kevn came to Nashville, and we spent about 10 days writing and recording for the film 'Tenderness' " (yet to be released)... - Thanks, Allison

From Russell:So I'm told there's many about who took the tone of my e-mail to you re song lyrics seriously. Obviously that was just a note between us in a tone that I thought you would find amusing.  I sent you the lyrics because you asked for them not because of any desire to correct or criticize anyone else.
I don't know how anyone could take what I wrote as anything but a self deprecating  send up , but there you go.
Let's just wind this back for a moment. Dave's mum died, I wrote him a song, Mr Doyle sang it beautifully, DK is "proud" so many people and friends around the world are getting to hear it.
You can tell all your readers from me I'm glad they liked getting to hear the song and all of us appreciate their appreciation. I know the song is bringing Dave some comfort because that's what he told me and really that was the one and only point. I'm really sorry that anyone was hurt or made sad by any of this. Not the intention at all. - RC

And I apologize for sharing what was meant as a private note and for unneeded opinions on my part - Mea culpa! - Murph

Screen Daily: Warner pushes past $1bn international mark with Potter at $405m -- Meanwhile, UPI’s Russell Crowe-starring State Of Play took in $400,000 and is set to soon cross the $50m mark; five Latin American territories will open over the next two months. - Thanks, Allison

The Independent UK: Dominic West: 'I would be marvellous in Batman' -- "..."Am I jinxing it?" he retorts. "I don't want it anyway." He's joking of course, but it's the sort of quip that gets West into trouble – or rather generates media storms-in-a-teacup, as when he appeared to criticise the BBC for doing costume drama like Cranford "brilliantly", but not being able "to do contemporary stuff". More recently West, as one headline writer put it, "hits out over foreign stars playing British heroes". The actor had been talking about the likes of Russell Crowe as Robin Hood in Ridley Scott's upcoming men-in-tights blockbuster and Johnny Depp portraying J M Barrie in Finding Neverland. A "spokesman for West", it was reported, claimed "the comments were intended to be ironic and had been taken out of context". - Thanks, Gill [ed note: Motor mouth -- But still loved him in The Wire]

Souths win again! South Sydney run in eight tries to thrash Sydney Roosters 40-20 - Thanks, CGee

[ed note:] For those who asked about the line "hanging his mother's cross" in Russell's song about Dave Kelly's mom, the words to the song are poetry, and can mean whatever you as a listener want them to mean. I particularly loved, "Why is life so beautiful that it must end."

I have set up a topic at the Crowe Yuku Forum for fans to put their memories of Dave's mom amd to tell Dave how sorry they are at his loss.

Russell Crowe commanded this ship in the Academy Award winning film "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World." The attention to detail is quite striking. [ed note: the following is mostly true, though there was no interruption in filming. Done while the cameras and effects were re-setting. More for fun than serious motivation, but the laugh must have been good for the Bunnies] --From CGee -- Rugby League Week, 15 July 2009 'The Mole' -- "Another Crowe Epic.” -- Russell Crowe has broken new ground by producing the most expensive motivational video in the history of rugby league - and maybe all of professional sport. In full Robin Hood regalia, wading through water in Wales, Crowe's film for Souths before the game against Newcastle featured hundreds of extras and medieval special effects. With blood and dismembered limbs floating around him, Crowe seemed to interrupt the filming of the epic to turn to the camera and tell the Bunnies: "You're playing the Knights? These are the Knights". The camera then panned to dead and dying extras in the background. Sadly, Souths lost!"

From Christine: RC was in the commentary box at Lord's Cricket ground today, shown on TV for about 10 mins jfrom 18.17, just before bad light stopped play. He sat next to his friend and wedding guest, famous cricketer Shane Warne, and acted as 'Third man' in the commentary team , being asked for comments and  a longer analysis at the end. They also asked him how much cricket he manages to watch, how he met Shane, and how the filming was going- he was on the walls of a 'French' castle earlier today. Lords is the premier ground in England and this match between England and Australia is the second of the all-important Ashes series.

Examiner: 17 Actors most Overdue for a Nomination -- 3. Russell Crowe-No nominations since 2001. Nominated 3 times and deserved to win 2 of them. UK Times: Why Brits rule on US TV -- "...Thus it was a terrible mistake for Dominic West to get all shouty this week on the sensitive subject of foreigners pinching prime British roles. West is, of course, the Old Etonian who played the gritty, grotty Baltimore cop Jimmy McNulty in The Wire. “I was sort of smarting from Russell Crowe coming over here and playing Robin Hood and all these foreigners coming over here and stealing our great heroes,” West said. “I felt I was striking a blow back by being a Brit playing a foreigner.” (He has a point about Robin Hood — now filming in a pine forest in Surrey — although Crowe is from New Zealand and his Maid Marian co-star Cate Blanchett is Australian, and presumably the Merry Men sing Waltzing Matilda.)

NY Times: Film/critic/director related: A Survivor of Film Criticism’s Heroic Age -- Mr. Sarris contributed to this ferment twice over. He introduced to Americans and argued for the French auteur theory, which holds that a great director speaks through his films no less than a novelist speaks through his books. A brilliant actor might transcend a mediocre film, but only a director can offer the sustained coherence and sensibility that yields great art.

passionforcinema.com: Casting Ouch! A Star is Found (Book Review) -- This book is a movie buff’s delight and has the most exciting first hand anecdotes about unknown actors who later became famous Hollywood stars. The films they have cast read like a dream list. The Godfather, Da Vinci Code, A Beautiful Mind, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, The Holiday, Jurassic Park, A Few Good Men, Home Alone, Ghost and Apollo 13 which we all love and remember are just a few of them. - Thanks, Lynda

An excerpt from the New Straits Times Online, Thursday, July 9, 2009: WHEN John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) is gunned down in a climactic scene in a film about one of America’s infamous bank robbers, the music stops, save a thud on the ground. The surroundings move in slow motion. The cinema mourns a fallen hero. It’s the same feeling you felt the first time you see Maximus (Russell Crowe) stabbed by Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) in the arena in Gladiator or William Wallace’s (Mel Gibson) body being pulled in four directions in Braveheart. - Thanks, Pamela

Wright On Film: Fine article on Michael Mann - "...Films such as The Insider, Ali, and Public Enemies are intimate character studies even if the subject matter of each is expansive. The Insider is as much about the news business as it is about the personal struggle of Jeffrey Wigand (Russell Crowe)." - Thanks, Lynda

The Financial Mail: A great, contemporary thriller - and portrayal of the media in crisis -- A brilliant, understated thriller, State of Play takes a keen scalpel to several major tectonic shifts in the Zeitgeist. These are on-the-button inquests into Washington sex scandals; paranoid "war on terror" conspiracy theories; and the prospective death of print journalism in the Internet age. - Thanks, Kris C

[In the "we wish" category?] - Money Central MSN: The Guccis: Dressed to kill -- With Gucci, you get expensive threads and fine leather. You also get jealousy, greed and murder. The story's already "in development" as a movie tentatively slated to star Russell Crowe and be directed by Ridley Scott. In it, the audience is sure to learn who killed Maurizio, the do-right grandson of landmark designer Rodolfo Gucci -- and why. Here's a hint: Hell hath no fury like a scorned ex-wife who fears the money spigot could get switched off. It's a morality tale about the decline of family dynasties. The twist? It's done nothing to take the sheen off the Gucci brand. - Thanks, Daisy

Virginiamedia.com: The most charming movie criminals - He might be a heroin dealer, but he's certainly no dope. Ridley Scott's movie saw the real-life Harlem drugs baron given a sympathetic treatment, with Denzel Washington's portrayal showcasing a man with a strong business ethic who cleverly thwarts the Mob and corrupt cops to establish his empire. Lucas's own spin of the American Dream is thwarted by Russell Crowe's detective Richie Roberts, but such is his charm the first guy to greet him upon his release from prison is Roberts himself. - Thanks, Allison

Skinner, who inherits a chateau and vineyard in Provence, returns to France intent on selling the property. Upon arriving, Skinner is faced with childhood memories, a love interest and family drama. Although wine isn’t the focus of the movie, the setting of the French vineyards is enough to make you want to uncork a bottle of your favorite red. - Thanks, Allison

Each was an heroic figure, neither seeking nor asking any quarter and both totally prepared to fight to the death.
